Brothers 2011
Thank you so much to Loretta McMeans, who submitted her story of heartbreak and hope in the face of an incurable disease, and how one quilt is making a difference. We wish you and your family all the best, Loretta!

I have 2 great-nephews, who I love dearly, that are afflicted with the fatal disease known as MPS III Sanfilippo Syndrome. I have been frustrated in my attempts to find a way to help them in some way as we live 350 miles away. It is very hard to organize a fundraiser for someone that the local people do not know. So, I created this memory quilt which includes many of the pictures of the boys that their parents use on their website “TeamJarod.org” and their FaceBook page “Team Jarod/Team Caleb.”

I made it for them to display at their local fundraisers to heighten awareness of the boys and their disorder. On the back I have appliqued 2 panels; one of the “fruits of the spirit” from Galations 5:22 and one of additional things I pray for them. I also appliqued a full legend of the quilt and why I named it “We are Brothers.” In addition, I attached a prayer that includes the words in the two panels. I pray that all who see it will be inspired to enjoin them in the fight for awareness, funding, a cure and help.

I hope to establish an Etsy shop in which I will make available placemats, quilted pictures, keychains, etc to raise money for them. I would love to have you feature this to also educate people about this orphan disease which has no cure, little funding for research and very few places in the country for assessment and treatment which creates incredible hardships on the families trying to help their children.
Thank you sincerely,
Lorretta McMeans
