Those of us who quilt know there’s so much more to a quilt than just a beautiful blanket; there’s hard work, love and often times a deeper story to tell.
That’s why we were excited to hear about the African American Quilt Guild of Oakland’s “Neighborhoods Coming Together: Quilts Around Oakland” project being described as a city-wide exhibition depicting the personality, history and social complexity of their home.
The quilts are being considered “a walking tour in textiles,” sharing many stories, feelings and beliefs of this California city, consisting of over 100 unique quilts from members of the guild.
In order to view these beautiful works of art, residents will need to travel to various locations around Oakland during the month of February.
For those of us who can’t be there, The African American Quilt Guild of Oakland website says they will be publishing a catalog depicting each quilt and the story behind it. To see a few of the gorgeous quilts, check out this image gallery. We can’t wait to see more!
